In The Pet of Paradise – Unicorn, Andrius Miezis conjures a creature that is both whimsical and unsettling. The figure, resembling a hybrid of child’s toy, mythic beast, and alien relic, stands in a dreamlike void. Its pale blue skin, tubular snout, and single mint-colored horn evoke innocence, yet the oversized mouth gripping a bright red lollipop hints at absurdity - or quiet menace.
The unicorn’s small frame and oddly human expression suggest captivity rather than majesty, as if paradise has been domesticated. The contrast between its playful surface and the muted, stormy background deepens the irony: even mythical purity, when confined by imagination or consumerism, becomes strange and artificial.
With his characteristic surreal humor, Miezis invites the viewer to question what remains of magic in a synthetic age - when even the unicorn, once a symbol of transcendence, is reduced to a “pet,” sweetened and subdued for modern delight.
